What Do We Consider to be Special Needs

Are Gifted and Talented Children Special Needs Children too?

Yes gifted and talented children are special needs too. It is a fact that they are gifted and talented, and are many times considered to be very intelligent but they also have special needs as well. They are often placed in a learning environment that they consider boring and not challenging enough, so they act out and are not willing to learn. Many times their teachers do not know what to do with them and they are often ignored, or even labeled as troublesome children.

According to excerpts from “What Should You Tell The Teacher About Your Gifted Child,” Carol Bainbridge says that “a bored gifted child can look like a child with ADHD, so by keeping the child motivated and challenged from the beginning of the school year can help eliminate the problem of being misdiagnosed. Because once a child is misdiagnosed, it is difficult to change the initial diagnosis, and this misdiagnosis can follow the child throughout his or her school year.” Take a few mintues to watch this short video of the labels placed on gifted and talented children.
