I understand the concern but I wonder - would your opinion be different if you were a parent? I think that knowing that I am sending my child to a school that is safe is worth having a talk with them to explain that the metal detecters aren't there to hurt them or do anything bad, they are there to make sure that every student is in a safe environment. This is especially true if I were sending my child to a school with prior safety problems.

Also, as a future teacher, I would like to know that I am not in harm's way regarding my students. One day, I hope to be able to teach an 11th grade English class without fear that I'll be gunned down as I turn my back to write on the board. I know that we can't live our lives afraid.. but this is a threat and a problem that must be addressed because students and teachers should be in a safe environment.

What do you think?
